{"id":7,"date":"2007-02-27T14:36:31","date_gmt":"2007-02-27T19:36:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamescheat.ca\/?p=7"},"modified":"2019-09-04T19:57:42","modified_gmt":"2019-09-05T00:57:42","slug":"virtual-private-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gamescheat.ca\/?p=7","title":{"rendered":"Virtual Private Network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>VPN <\/strong>(Virtual Private Network) has now become the means of communication for many small to enterprise level organizations.\u00c2\u00a0 If you are scarce on financial resources then VPN may be the way to go for connectivity between two remote locations.\u00c2\u00a0 All it will cost is the monthly charge for internet access,\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 the access can be in the form of DSL, cable internet, ISDN, frame relay, T1, wireless, satellite and any\u00c2\u00a0circuit your ISP can provide.\u00c2\u00a0 In other words all that you require is unrestricted access to the internet, namely IPSEC traffic.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: right;\"><div style=\"margin: 15px 15px 15px 15px\";><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"pub-3319935785736004\";\ngoogle_alternate_color = \"FFFFFF\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 234;\ngoogle_ad_height = 60;\ngoogle_ad_format = \"234x60_as\";\ngoogle_ad_type = \"text_image\";\ngoogle_ad_channel =\"\";\ngoogle_color_border = \"cccccc\";\ngoogle_color_link = \"cc0000\";\ngoogle_color_bg = \"ffffff\";\ngoogle_color_text = \"000000\";\ngoogle_color_url = \"008000\";\n\/\/--><\/script>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"\n  src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/div><\/div><p><strong>How does VPN work ?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>VPN creates a virtual tunnel between two IP addresses, in most cases the IPs are public and distant from each other. All traffic between the two sites is transmitted within this virtual tunnel.\u00c2\u00a0 The tunnel simulates a private circuit.\u00c2\u00a0 Because VPN is normally established across the internet, traffic can be exposed and intercepted by anyone sniffing the internet.\u00c2\u00a0 Well, there is a solution, all traffic can be encrypted.\u00c2\u00a0 There are many levels of encryption that can be applied, the higher it goes the more secure it is.\u00c2\u00a0 Anything encryption newer than 3DES is very secure, 3DES has not been hacked or broken yet.\u00c2\u00a0 Obviously the higher the encryption, the larger the packet size.\u00c2\u00a0 Encryption can add considerable large packets overhead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>VPN Design<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The VPN design is much like any other network,\u00c2\u00a0 site to site, spoke and hub, VPN client and hub.\u00c2\u00a0 The hub can be a Microsoft Windows server, a Linux server, or hardware appliance.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The remote can be\u00c2\u00a0VPN client software running on a computer, Windows server, Linux server, or hardware appliance.\u00c2\u00a0 There\u00c2\u00a0are many hardware appliance vendors, what you choose depends on your budget.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 In this case the the term \u2018you get what you pay for\u2019 holds true, the more expensive appliances have many value added features and encryption capabilities.\u00c2\u00a0 Some of the high end appliances such as Cisco PIX and Netscreen (acquired by Juniper), are not only VPN appliances routers, they also have advance firewall capabilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>User friendly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have configured both Cisco PIX and Juniper appliances.\u00c2\u00a0 Juniper is a lot more user friendly, they have done a great job creating a browser based interface.\u00c2\u00a0 You can pretty much do most of the configuration using a browser, in some cases for advance users you may have to use the command line to configure.\u00c2\u00a0 The debug command can only be run using CLI (command line interface).\u00c2\u00a0 Cisco is the opposite of Juniper, the browser interface offers very basic configuration capability, advance configuration must be done using the CLI.\u00c2\u00a0 I recently met with Cisco representatives and they informed me that Cisco has come a long way since I last used it, they have made great improvements to the browser interface ever since.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VPN (Virtual Private Network) has now become the means of communication for many small to enterprise level organizations.\u00c2\u00a0 If you are scarce on financial resources then VPN may be the way to go for connectivity between two remote locations.\u00c2\u00a0 All&hellip;<\/p>\n<p class=\"more-link-p\"><a class=\"more-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gamescheat.ca\/?p=7\">Read more &rarr;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[65],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.gamescheat.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.gamescheat.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.gamescheat.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.gamescheat.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.gamescheat.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=7"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"http:\/\/www.gamescheat.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":708,"href":"http:\/\/www.gamescheat.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7\/revisions\/708"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.gamescheat.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=7"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.gamescheat.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=7"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.gamescheat.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=7"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
